Frequently asked questions
How does a session work?
Tap Start Session and you'll see one word at a time for ten minutes. Swipe right if you know the word and left if you don't. After a left swipe, Aprender shows the dictionary form the word belongs to, a short note on the form and its English meaning, then you tap Continue. When time runs out you finish the card you're on, then see a review of the session.
What does the Hint button do?
It shows the English meaning on the card before you answer. Hints aren't recorded, so you can peek and still swipe honestly.
How does a word become "known"?
A word joins your known list once you get it right 9 times in your last 10 answers. Any form of the word counts, so "es" and "fue" both count towards ser. If you miss a known word 3 times in a row, it leaves the list and comes back for practice. About one card in ten revisits a word you already know.
Can I end a session early?
Yes. Tap Quit at the top left and choose End session. You'll still see the review, and every answer you gave is saved.
How do I switch language?
Tap Change on the main menu, or open Settings. Your progress is kept separately for each language, so switching never loses anything.
How do I start a language again from scratch?
Open Settings and reset progress. This clears your progress for the language you're studying now and leaves other languages alone. It can't be undone.
Does Aprender need an internet connection?
No. Every word is built into the app, and your progress is stored on your phone, so it works anywhere.
Will my progress move to a new phone?
Your progress is part of your iPhone's normal backup. If you restore a new iPhone from an iCloud or computer backup, your progress comes with it. There's no account, so progress doesn't sync between devices that are in use at the same time.
What happens if I delete the app?
Deleting Aprender deletes your progress with it, unless you restore from a backup made before you deleted it.
Where do the word lists come from?
Word frequencies are adapted from FrequencyWords © Hermit Dave, built from film and TV subtitles and licensed CC BY-SA 4.0. Word forms were grouped into dictionary entries, names and vulgar words were removed, and translations and notes were added. The full credit is in the app's Settings.
A translation looks wrong. How do I report it?
Please email the word, the language, and what you think it should say. Corrections go into the next update, and your progress isn't affected.
